As the number of English language learners in the United States
continues to grow, educators are seeking to develop research-based
instructional strategies to serve these students. CAL’s
projects focus on language and literacy acquisition in the elementary
and secondary grades, particularly for learners for whom English
is a second language. The projects and publications outlined
within this section present research, program designs, and strategies
for enhancing the language and literacy development of English
language learners.

Computer-Based Test of Science and Math for Beginning English Language Learners
CAL is working with the WIDA Consortium to develop ONPAR, an alternative test that allows students to demonstrate their content knowledge with a test instrument sensitive to their lower proficiency in English. CAL and WIDA recently launched the ONPAR Web site. Learn more.
