According to the 2000
U.S. Census, nearly one person in five (or 47 million U.S. residents
age 5 and older) spoke a language other than English at home in
2000. The continued growth in the United States of speakers
of languages other than English is reflected in the rapidly increasing
number of students in U.S. schools for whom English is a second
language.
Teachers face a growing challenge in serving this expanding
student population. CAL is committed to providing research-based
practical resources to help teachers and program administrators
meet this challenge and enhance their effectiveness. We offer
publications, professional development services, and curriculum
materials related to English as a second language (ESL), foreign
language, and dual language education in a variety of educational
settings:
