Overseas: Overseas Service Provider Toolkit

Topics: TRAVEL (IOM Bangkok)

Activity: Simulation: In the Plane

Time

20 –30 minutes

Materials

string with ‘seat numbers’ attached

Procedure

  1. Set up the string across the room with seat numbers (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, etc) on it. Set up the chairs in rows, one for each ‘seat’, to represent plane seats.

  2. Have students line up with their boarding passes and proceed to find their own seats.

  3. They stow their hand baggage in the cabin above their heads, or under their seat. They put on their seat belts and ensure their seats are upright.

  4. Once everyone is seated, tell participants you are now the flight attendant and stand if front of everyone and give the flight attendant’s spiel:

  5. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Japan Airlines flight 345. Please ensure that your bags are stowed safely under your seats or in the storage bins above your head. Please make sure your seats are in an upright position and that your seat belts are fastened in preparation for takeoff. In case of emergency, oxygen masks will drop down in front of you. Put yours on immediately, and then give assistance to your children. Lifejackets are under your seat. Emergency exits can be found in the front, middle, and back of the plane. Flight time to Narita will be 4 hours. While you are seated, we suggest that you wear your seat belt at all times. Thank you for flying with Japan Airlines; we hope you enjoy your flight.”

  6. Walk up the aisle and check that everyone has their seat belt on and their seat is upright.

  7. Sit down and prepare for takeoff.

  8. Make a joke. Tell participants there is no pilot. Assign a volunteer to act as pilot. The plane takes off.

  9. 15 minutes later: Walk up the aisle, handing out peanuts and asking people what they would like to drink.

  10. One hour later: Ask what’s happening. (People are reading or doing nothing)

  11. Two hours later: Come up the aisle serving a meal. Ask each person, in English, if they would like chicken or fish.

  12. Three hours later: Ask what’s happening. Everyone is in line for the bathroom. Explain usage of bathroom, especially if participants are used to a ‘squat’ type – they’re supposed to sit on the thing, not climb up on it; toilet paper is to be used in moderation and flushed. NO smoking in bathroom.

  13. Show the AUSCO video portion that shows use of the bathroom.

  14. Eight hours later: Prepare for landing. Seat belts on, seats upright.

  15. Show participants the pictures of the inside of the plane.
