In this interactive presentation, Dr. August reviews recent research on the development of literacy in language minority children. Central to this discussion of current research are the findings from the National Literacy Panel. The role of the panel was to identify, assess, and synthesize literacy research related to language-minority children and youth in six areas: the development of literacy, the relationship between second language oral proficiency and second language literacy, cross-linguistic relationships, sociocultural contexts and literacy development, instructional approaches and professional development, and student assessment.
