Connecting Diverse Cultures Publication

Understanding Cultural Diversity Through the Power of Video
Connecting Diverse Cultures, CAL's new facilitator's guide, serves as a companion to our refugee families and youth DVD, which includes the videos A New Day and Be Who You Are. This guide incorporates segments of the videos into a selection of engaging activities designed to help increase understanding of and respect for other cultures and beliefs. This guide has been developed to assist teachers and facilitators in enhancing tolerance and multiculturalism in K–12 classrooms and in adult ESL classes.

Diane August, a senior research scientist at CAL, and Timothy Shanahan, a professor of urban education at the University of Illinois, Chicago, will lead an upcoming webinar in the SchoolsMovingUp series hosted by WestEd. They will focus on approaches to literacy instruction for English learners from their chapter in Improving Education for English Learners: Research-Based Approaches published this year by the California Department of Education. Dr. August and Dr. Shanahan are also the editors of Developing Literacy in Second-Language Learners: Report of the National Literacy Panel on Language-Minority Children and Youth.
