Teaching Reading Effectively to English Language Learners in the Elementary Grades: Knowledge, Skills, and Strategies for Success
This interactive workshop applies knowledge, research, and best practices from the fields of English as a Second Language and reading to guide elementary educators in teaching reading to English language learners (ELLs) in Grades K-6. Hands-on activities engage participants in discovering how learning core reading skills may differ for ELLs, with an emphasis on instructional strategies modified for different English language proficiency levels. Two guiding questions are addressed: 1) What’s different and what’s the same about teaching reading to ELLs and native English speakers? and 2) What strategies can I use or adapt to effectively teach my ELLs to read successfully? Diverse experiences with multicultural children’s literature and singable books appropriate for ELLs are also featured. Comprehensive handouts are provided to participants for the workshop activities and are supplemented with a power point presentation that is also distributed.
