Promoting Oral Proficiency Gain in Spanish-speaking Study Abroad Homestay Placements
This session describes a study investigating training designed to promote oral proficiency gain in homestays. Host families in semester programs in Chile and Peru were trained to increase conversational exchange with students (n=30). Pre- and post- oral proficiency tests and recorded conversations at home are analyzed to compare student language gains to a control group with untrained families (n=20) while attitudinal surveys explore student and host beliefs. The session will examine student and host reflections on the training and homestay experience.
