Assessment and Vocabulary Development
It is crucial to learn more about the types of academic vocabulary that ELLs have not acquired through exposure to English. An assessment, the Root Word Inventory, was developed to measure students’ knowledge of academic vocabulary that appears frequently in grade-level texts. Findings indicate English proficient students outperformed ELLs on all assessment measures. However, there were group differences in types of words students found difficult. Words with multiple meanings were easier for English proficient students while words that were cognates were easier for ELLs. Findings will guide the development of a vocabulary intervention that builds on ELLs cognate knowledge and targets the types of words that Spanish-English bilinguals need to comprehend text as they move through the upper elementary grades.
