Making the Common Core Standards Work for English Language Learners: The Importance of Linking English Language Proficiency Standards to the Common Core Standards
The face of public schools has changed dramatically over the past three decades, and English language learners (ELLs) now constitute more than 10 percent of the preK-12 population. In the next three decades, ELLs will have an increasing impact on public schools, institutions of higher education and the workplace. Schools and districts across the country are beginning to implement the Common Core Standards; how can they be used to improve education outcomes for ELLs?

Acquiring English language proficiency and grade-level content knowledge simultaneously is a crucial step that sets the foundation for postsecondary career and higher education options-teaching both language and content needs to be done right.

The panel will examine the role of English language proficiency in light of the new Common Core Standards, as well as discuss what stakeholders must consider to ensure successful alignment and implementation
