Developing Materials to Promote and Analyze Oral Proficiency Gain in Study Abroad Homestay Placements (poster session)
This poster describes the development of materials for a study of host family training intended to promote oral proficiency gain in homestay placements. Researchers designed structured training for host families to increase meaningful conversational exchange and developed protocols for pre and post administration of semi-direct oral proficiency tests, recording of student-host family conversations, and surveys of students and hosts to analyze the gains made by students in semester-long programs in Peru, Chile, Senegal, Jordan, and China. The poster describes the process of developing protocols to facilitate data collection in diverse cultural contexts and discusses challenges, best practices, and lessons learned.
