About CALPast CAL PresentationsCalifornia Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) 2012March 7 – 10, 2012 Thursday, March 8, 2012What's Easy? What's Hard? What Helps? Voices of English Learners To serve English learners effectively, it is important to hear their voices. What do they think makes it easy or hard to learn English? And critically, what strategies do they think help? Watch and respond to a new video about English learners in Grades 3-8, as they answer these questions in focus groups and interviews, with commentary from the principal. The findings confirm other research data and can inform your instructional plans for English learners. Handouts provided. Presenter: Betty Ansin Smallwood Friday, March 9, 2012What's Different about Teaching Reading to Students Learning English (Full Day Institute) In this lively institute, K-8 educators learn how successful reading instruction is similar and different for English learners (ELs) and proficient English speakers. Using a “principles-to- practices” approach, the presenter explains how the recommendations of the National Literacy Panel (August and Shanahan, 2006) and other research findings inform reading practices for ELs. Through fun, hands-on activities, participants experience, reflect upon and apply effective strategies to teach the major components of reading for ELs. Handouts provided.
