Plenary Lecture: Applied Linguistics for a Changing World: What Difference Does it Make?
According to Charles Ferguson, CAL’s founder, the Center for Applied Linguistics was established “to cover anything that had to do with solving practical language problems.” This presentation will reflect on that agenda over time and the contributions of applied linguistics and related fields in the changing world around us. Examples will be given that illustrate how individuals and groups who apply the relevant knowledge, skills, and disposition in tackling language-related problems can and DO make a difference.
