Developing Oral Proficiency in Adults
The presenter shares free resources from a new website that highlights level-appropriate speaking and listening activities for adults learning English. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of oral language proficiency and communicative language teaching, based on insights from second language acquisition research.

Reading for the Workplace: Free LINCS Resources
This workshop will address teaching adult English language learners reading for the workplace. Presenters will address sociological and skill-based aspects of teaching reading for this setting. Participant will develop reading activities emphasizing the four components of reading using contextualized and authentic workplace materials. Free online resources from the LINCS collections will be featured.

Using the SIOP Model with Adult ELLs
Adult English language learners (ELLs) are not just enrolled in English as a second language (ESL) classes, they are also in ABE, GED, ASE, and vocational classes. This presentation looks at using a sheltered-English approach from K-12 practice in order to work with adult ELLs in content-based instructional venues.

Panelists representing national organizations & instructor preparation programs will discuss instructor training & standards trends. More importantly, they will listen as the audience identifies competencies new ABE/ESL instructors must have. Session will be recorded & comments transcribed for panelists’ use in preparing 21st century instructors.

A Professional Development Model for Teachers of ESOL and Workforce Development
Participants will have an opportunity to examine a Professional Development model for ESOL conducted through a Workforce Agency. The workshop includes a step-by-step analysis of how the two entities created, planned, and executed this blended professional development consisting of two face-to-face modules with online participation in between. Participants will review planning steps including teacher needs assessments, logistics, and flexibility needed to be successful. Finally, we will create models useful for participants for local professional development.
