Sequential vs. Simultaneous Biliteracy Development in Dual Language Programs
This presentation will compare three basic program models: those in which all students learn to read in Spanish first, in English and Spanish simultaneously, or in their native language first. We will discuss pros and cons of these approaches and compare examples of their implementation to research on best practices.

Working Together! A Collaboration Amongst a School, University and CAL
An elementary school principal partnered with a university and the Center for Applied Linguistics to create a graduate course in TWI SIOP to help dual language teachers acquire their ESL/Bilingual endorsement. We will describe the collaboration and course. Teachers will share reflections on the impact of TWI SIOP, lessons, and thematic units.

Guiding Principles for the Guiding Principles: Conducting a Successful Self-Evaluation
Participants will learn how to use the Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education for program self-evaluation. Specific topics covered include engaging stakeholders, finding and documenting evidence to support ratings, collecting and analyzing qualitative data, disseminating findings, and creating an action plan for improvement.

Two-Way SIOP Training - Adding the Cultural Component
For the past two years, the Center for Applied Linguistics has taken the SIOP training one step beyond the traditional classroom and into dual language programs around the United States. This session will focus on looking at schools. districts, and teachers who have gone through the training and the effects they have had on them. Students samples will also be shown throughout the session.
