Working With Adult Learners as Bilingual and Multilingual Individuals
In our focus on developing English language skills of adult learners, it is possible to overlook their often complex and rich lives in their native languages and cultures. It can also be difficult to know how to build on native language skills in instruction. This presentation gives an overview of the work of the Alliance for the Advancement of Heritage Languages, which focuses on the vitality of languages other than the country’s majority language, and the research on ways to build on learners’ native language in the classroom. This overview will be followed by discussion of programmatic and instructional implications.
