K-2 Chinese Curriculum: Impact of a School Partnership on Learning
This session highlights partnerships between U.S. and Chinese elementary schools as the cornerstone of an innovative, standards-based K2 Chinese curriculum that aims to foster cross-cultural understanding and language development. Participants will discuss the development and integration of a school partnership with curriculum designers from the Center for Applied Linguistics and the National K12 Foreign Language Resource Center at Iowa State University and with a Chinese-language teacher who has implemented the curriculum. Participants will learn strategies and methods for developing a standards-based Chinese curriculum, including backward design, thematic planning, developmentally appropriate lessons and culturally rich learning materials.

Assessing Chinese Language Proficiency in Young Students: Strategies and Results
In this session, participants will examine the Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA) instrument. Through a multimedia presentation, participants will follow the progress of SOPAs adaptation and application in early elementary school Chinese programs in two Midwest urban school districts. After this study of its development and implementation, participants will evaluate its efficacy during a discussion of the results of a year-end study of Chinese language proficiency in kindergarten students, who were assessed using SOPA. Participants will receive a handout with sample items from the SOPA and a summary of the research.
