Assessment of Heritage Language Learners: A Pilot Study of Self-Assessment and Learner Beliefs
This paper describes a research study investigating the assessment of heritage language learners (HLLs). The number of programs focusing on HLLs in the United States has increased in recent years (Brecht & Ingold, 2002), but there is little research targeting the assessment of HLLs (Malone, Peyton, & Kim, 2011). The study explores the alignment between self-assessments and OPI ratings for 10 HLLs of Mandarin Chinese, as well as their perceptions of and beliefs about oral proficiency assessment tasks. This paper proposes future directions for research on assessment of HLLs and for the development of assessments to meet HLL needs.
