Spoken Language in the Classroom: Testing and Teaching
Spoken language and written language use different styles; compared to writers, speakers use simpler sentences, repeat themselves more, and focus their audience’s attention using different words and phrases. This presents a challenge for test developers who are seeking to assess academic listening comprehension. To provide a valid indicator of students’ academic English level, test items should feature spoken discourse that is comparable to the actual speech that English language learners (ELLs) are hearing in the classroom. In this presentation, participants will create both written and oral approaches to explaining one academic topic, thereby exploring what “academic listening comprehension” really means.
