Developing Oral Proficiency of Adults Learning English
Developing strong oral proficiency skills is often the main goal for adults learning English. However, students need to be able to speak, understand, and be understood in many contexts outside of the classroom such as work, at a doctor’s office, or accessing community services. The presenter shares key points from research and second language acquisition theory that support the communicative approach to language instruction– specifically, a focus on interaction (input and output) and communication (focus on meaning) in the classroom to improve students’ speaking and listening skills. Participants will gain tools and knowledge for developing instructional activities in their classroom to improve oral proficiency.
