About CALPast PresentationsNational Science Teacher's Association (NSTA) 2007 National Conference March 29 – April 1, 2007 Saturday, March 31, 2007Effective Research-validated Instruction for English Language Learners in Middle School Science Presenters: Deborah Short & Jennifer Himmel This session presented instructional strategies within the SIOP Model that middle school science teachers can use to make content comprehensible to English language learners. Presenters illustrated how teachers identify the language and literacy skills students need for science, design lessons to promote second language development, and assess students scientific language knowledge. Through demonstrations and videoclips, participants experienced some of these strategies directly. Current middle school research on the SIOP Model and scientific language assessments, funded by the U.S. Department of Education through CREATE, was also described.
