Promoting Oral Proficiency Gain in Study Abroad Homestay Placements
This paper describes a study investigating training to promote oral proficiency gain in homestays. Host families in semester-long Spanish, Chinese, and Russian language programs were trained to increase conversational exchange with students (n=30/language). Quantitative and qualitative analyses compare student language gains to a control group with untrained families (n=20). This research expands the body of knowledge on second language acquisition in study abroad to inform stakeholders about how to optimize language learning benefits of homestays. Presenters will discuss challenges and lessons learned from data collection in varied cultural and linguistic contexts.
