Welcome!

Students in classroomWelcome to the Center for Applied Linguistics’ (CAL’s) Developing Oral Proficiency of Adults Learning English professional development module, where you will find practical tools, activities, and resources for working with adult English language learners.

This website is designed for ESL practitioners who want to know more about building the speaking and listening skills of adult English language learners. Through readings, interactive tools, video clips, and collections of instructional activities, you will learn more about what oral language proficiency is, how it can be developed through classroom instruction, and how its development can be tracked through standardized assessment. You will see and hear real adult English language learners at various stages of oral proficiency development and consider what instructional approaches would best meet their needs.
