Celebrating 50 years: 1959 – 2009

Events

TeamUsing the theme of Applied Linguistics for a Changing World: Connecting Research and Practice as a foundation, CAL developed a rich agenda of activities and projects to pursue during the anniversary year designed to provide relevant information and significant contributions around issues of language, culture, and diversity.

To celebrate our anniversary year, CAL undertook a number of public events and resource development projects designed to advance the pursuit of our mission, especially related to information sharing, and to build a strong foundation for our work in the future.

Board-invited session:
Looking Ahead: Connecting Culture and Language in the U.S. Classroom

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages 2009 Convention
March 27, 2009  Denver, CO
3:00 – 4:45 pm, Room 601

The U.S. student population is increasingly diverse, and issues of culture and language affect how teachers, administrators, and other service providers work with English language learners. Drawing on decades of experience addressing these issues, CAL provides information, tools, and practical tips to help practitioners offer instruction that is responsive to diverse student backgrounds. This session focuses on the issues and challenges faced by newcomers to the United States – immigrants and refugees -- and practitioners working with them, bringing CAL's learning from both global and national perspectives. The presenters will share research-based methodologies, practices, and tools for working with English language learners in preK-12 classrooms and with adults in a variety of settings. Attendees will increase their understanding of cultural issues in working with English language learners, learn about successful strategies and techniques, and receive samples of tools that can inform their instruction.

Center for Applied Linguistics staff presenting: Joy Kreeft Peyton, Sanja Bebic, Miriam Burt, Sandra Gutierrez, Betty Ansin Smallwood

We hope these events will emphasize the crucial roles that language and culture play in creating equity and access in a democratic society and continue to highlight the importance of institutions such as CAL — where research integrates with practice to improve the world in which we live.
