Preface

This booklet is a basic introduction to the people, history, and culture of Bosnia, with a particular focus on Bosnian Muslims. It is designed primarily for American service providers and sponsors.

The guide was written by Lynn Maners, Ph.D., the last American anthropologist to have completed dissertation fieldwork in Bosnia and Herzegovina before the breakup of Yugoslavia. At present he is on the faculty at Pima College and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Arizona, both in Tucson. He is a member of the Society for the Anthropology of Europe, a unit of the American Anthropological Association, and other professional organizations.

Several other people contributed to this fact sheet. We are especially grateful to Craig Packard, a 1973-1974 Fulbright and IREX scholar to Yugoslavia, for his helpful guidance, and to Wayles Browne, a professor of Slavic languages and linguistics at Cornell University, and William Sage, international liaison for the Immigration and Refugee Program of Church World Service, for reading and commenting on the preliminary draft.

Finally, we would like to thank the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the U.S. Department of State, whose support made this guide possible.

Donald A. Ranard, Editor
