Overseas: Overseas Service Provider Toolkit

TOPIC: HOUSING (ICMC Istanbul)

Activity: Compare and Contrast

Objective

By comparing and contrasting the housing situation/system in their own country or the country of asylum, participants will be able to establish/realize their knowledge of the housing procedure/system in the U.S.

Procedure

The facilitator asks the trainees:

  • What do you know about the housing in your country?

  • What is a simple house like?

  • How big is it?

  • Is it based on contracts?

  • Do people usually own them?

  • What is the rent like?

  • Is it easy to own/buy a house?

  • What do people prefer to do?

  • Are there tenant rights?

  • What are the responsibilities of the landlord/lady?

This activity can be done written if the majority of the group is literate. If not, the facilitator can elicit the answers verbally and get a general idea of the housing in the countries where the refugees come from.

The trainer plays the video and asks the trainees to identify and write the differences between the housing they are familiar with and the housing they see in the video.
