A Focus on English Language Learners in Middle School

Speaker Biography

PHIL VAHEY (Ph.D., UC Berkeley, 1998) is a Senior Research Scientist with SRI's Center for Technology in Learning (CTL). He studies mathematics teaching and learning, and particularly the design of representationally rich technology interventions for mathematics learning. He is the senior SRI mathematics education consultant on the Department of Education-funded Early Elementary Mathematics Curriculum Evaluation. Dr. Vahey also leads multiple NSF-funded mathematics education projects. Dr. Vahey's research interests also include the use of data analysis in cross-disciplinary learning activities, the use of handheld computers in K-12 education, and the use of web-based tools to support math and science learning. Dr. Vahey received his Ph.D. in Education from the UC Berkeley School of Education, where he studied educational software design for middle school mathematics curriculum.
