A National Survey of School/Community-Based Organization Partnerships Serving At-Risk Students

FUNDER: Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence (CREDE)

Educators and researchers alike have come to recognize that school- and family-based interventions do not by themselves always provide sufficient academic support for students. To help fill the gap, community based organizations (CBOs) have been partnering with schools to promote students' academic progress.

This project identified school-CBO partnerships which include among their goals supporting the academic achievement of language minority students. We conducted a national survey to learn more about the features of exemplary programs that these partnerships are delivering and visited 17 successful partnerships. Analysis showed that successful programs sponsored by school-CBO partnerships have adequate resources–financial backing, qualified staff, space, and supplies. The programs are flexible and they are responsive to their clients: appropriate, accessible, and valuing of clients' abilities. Finally, successful programs evaluate the impact of their services.

Major Research Questions

  • What types of school-CBO partnerships are in place in this country that are designed to promote the academic achievement of language minority students?

  • Of these partnerships, which are most successful? What makes them successful?

  • What are the essential features of a successful partnership?
