Educational Research Methodology
Micheline Chalhoub-Deville graduated in 1987 with a B.A. in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from Beirut University College in Lebanon. From The Ohio State University, she received her M.A. in 1989 and Ph.D. in 1994, specializing in TESOL and Foreign Language Education. Dr. Chalhoub-Deville joined the University of Iowa
in 1997 as an Assistant Professor. She moved up in the ranks and received tenure and an appointment as an Associate Professor in 2000 and the rank of Full Professor in 2005. At the University of Iowa she taught courses on second language assessment, second language planning, and second language acquisition for teachers. She joined the University of North Carolina, Greensboro August 2005 as a Full Professor in the Department of Educational Research Methodology where she teaches courses in second language assessment, measurement, and statistics. She is currently teaching ERM 617 Statistical Methods in Education and ERM 711 Language Assessment and Testing.
Dr. Chalhoub-Deville is recognized internationally for her work in the field of second/foreign language assessment. She has published in various books and journals, including Language Testing, Language Learning, Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, and Foreign Language Annals. Dr. Chalhoub-Deville received the International Language Testing Association (ILTA) 1995 Award for Best Article published in the field of language testing.
Dr. Chalhoub-Deville has given workshops on a variety of topics related to language testing. She has directed several federally funded projects for developing proficiency-based assessment instruments and computer adaptive tests. Through her successful grant writing efforts, she organized an international conference on second language computer adaptive testing in 1996 and edited Issues in Computer Adaptive Testing of Reading Proficiency, published in 1999 by Cambridge University Press. She just had an edited book, Inference and Generalizability in Applied Linguistics: Multiple Perspectives, published by John Benjamins Publishing Company.
Dr. Chalhoub-Deville is the founder and first president of the Mid-West Association of Language Testers (MwALT). She has served on the executive board of the ACTFL Second Language Research Special Interest Group and the American Association of Teachers of Arabic Executive Board. She has served as a member of the TOEFL Board and as chair of the TOEFL Committee of Examiners.
She is a member of the Editorial Board for Language Testing and Language Assessment Quarterly. Dr. Chalhoub-Deville has served on various award committees, such as the ACTFL Pimsleur Award for Research and the International Language Testing Association (ILTA) Best Article published on Language Testing.
Finally, Dr. Chalhoub-Deville was awarded, in 2000, the Outstanding Young Scholar Award by the Educational Testing Service—TOEFL. Also, in 2003, she was one of two researchers invited to write a paper for the special issue of Language Testing. The special issue marks the twentieth anniversary of Language Testing, the premier journal in the language testing field.
