Description and Scholarships

Funder Information

Funding for the development of the EHLS program is provided by the National Security Education Program (NSEP). NSEP also provides scholarships for qualified program participants who agree to work for the U.S. federal government for one year after completing the program. Scholarship recipients must take the initiative themselves to secure appropriate federal employment.

As part of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), NSEP has worked since 1994 to help English-speaking U.S. citizens develop high-level proficiency in less commonly taught languages and cultures. With Congressional authorization to initiate the EHLS program, NSEP is now working with heritage communities and helping individuals who have fluency in their native languages to develop proficiency in English.
