SOPA/ELLOPA Online Training

Woman working on computerCAL now offers periodic online instructor-mediated courses that teach participants how to administer and rate oral language proficiency for students in grades K-8 using the Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA) and the Early Language Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment (ELLOPA). Courses are offered when a minimum number of students are interested in purchasing the course.

Moderated Introduction to SOPA/ELLOPA
English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

The Moderated Introduction to SOPA/ELLOPA online course provides an orientation to the Student Oral Proficiency Assessment (SOPA) and the Early Language Listening and Oral Proficiency Assessment (ELLOPA) based on the content offered at CAL’s live 2-day workshops. The course includes the following: information about the purpose, background, and format of the SOPA and ELLOPA; immersion and FLES SOPA and ELLOPA tasks; tips for effective interviewing and rating; practice administering and rating with a pair of students; and self-assessment tools. The course includes moderated discussions and assignments led by an experienced CAL trainer, online discussions of key issues related to the SOPA and ELLOPA, feedback on assignments and quizzes from an experienced CAL trainer, and online access to the CAL Oral Proficiency Assessment Administrator’s Manual and to model immersion and FLES SOPA tasks. CAL recommends this course for teachers who would like direct guidance in preparing to administer the SOPA or ELLOPA.


Rating the SOPA/ELLOPA
English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish

This moderated online course provides teachers with language-specific practice and includes video clips of interviews in English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. This 4-module training course includes intensive practice rating of actual SOPA and ELLOPA interviews at the different proficiency levels; interactive, moderated discussions of key issues related to rating the SOPA and ELLOPA; feedback from an experienced SOPA/ELLOPA trainer on assignments and quizzes; and online access to the CAL Oral Proficiency Assessment Administrator’s Manual and to model immersion and FLES SOPA and ELLOPA tasks. The rating course also provides individualized training and guidance on SOPA and ELLOPA rating. Pre-Requisite: completion of a face-to-face SOPA/ELLOPA workshop or the Moderated Introduction to SOPA/ELLOPA course prior to registering for the Rating the SOPA/ELLOPA.
