CAL Commentary
Interrogating the “Language Gap”

This document highlights the work of Professor Jonathan Rosa at Stanford University, who provides a sociolinguistic critique on the terminology used to define emergent bilinguals and introduces a raciolinguistic framework as a way to interrogate the language gap and other deficit perspectives. Dr. Rosa is this year’s recipient of CAL’s Charles A. Ferguson Award for Outstanding Scholarship.

CAL English Proficiency Tests

CAL English Proficiency Tests are a suite of separate English language proficiency tests developed for primary and secondary students and teachers in Latin America and can be appropriately modified for use in other countries where English is taught as a foreign language. The recently launched CAL English Proficiency Tests for Students measures the English language proficiency of English language learners at two levels: primary school and secondary school. The test measures students’ English language ability in four skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Spotlight on Language Policy Research

The Center for Applied Linguistics is pleased to host the Language Policy Research Network (LPReN), a research network affiliated with the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée, (the International Association of Applied Linguistics) Research Networks Committee initially launched in 2006 and renewed in January 2018.

LPReN is an international network of researchers, scholars, and stakeholders invested in issues related to educational language policy and its impact on communities.
