Module 1: Introduction
Scenario - Non-profit

Nanette works for a multinational NGO that concentrates on humanitarian efforts in Africa.  She is in charge of additional language training for all new employees. She needs a test that will assess their starting levels of proficiency in the languages spoken in the countries in which they will work.  All test-takers are over 18.  Some are native English speakers, some are not.

Get out a sheet of paper and brainstorm one example each for how the following terms will influence what language test Nanette should choose:

validity
reliability
practicality
impact

When you're done brainstorming, roll your mouse over the picture of Nanette to compare your answers.

Positive Washback

Does your organization offer language classes as well as tests?  An effort to focus instruction on oral skills will help your students show how well they can speak on a test that measures oral proficiency.  This will help them perform well on the test and gain valuable language skills.
