This workshop presents an overview of Sociocultural Competence, one of the three pillars of Dual Language Education, and how it has been defined over the years; from positive self -esteem, to cultural awareness to cultural identity to critical consciousness. We will review the sociocultural rubrics from Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education and apply those to school and classroom settings. Participants will use a Sociocultural Program Reflection guide to assess how the strands of the Guiding Principles can be used to assess classroom and program implementation of these goals.
