Does it Work?: Enhancing Raters’ Awareness of World Englishes Features through a Special Training Package

8:00am - 5:30pm EDT
Presented at: ECOLT 2015

As English has been increasingly used as a lingua franca among nonnative speakers, language testing researchers are becoming aware that international language tests targeting native speaker as the norm no longer represent the global landscape of English use.

This experimental study investigates to what extent raising raters’ awareness of varieties of World Englishes during training affects raters’ scores and scoring processes. Findings from this study have implications for the debate on the assessment of World Englishes and rater training practice.
