This presentation reports findings from an ongoing study of Chinese undergraduates regarding their investment in English learning, imagined identities and ideal English learning communities, and perspectives on English language education in China. The study aims to expand the world’s understanding of Chinese learners of English. Research results will inform English language educators about Chinese students’ investment in learning English and their imagined identities and communities, suggest areas in which educational approaches for these students might improve, and provide suggestions to policy makers and English curriculum writers about ways to better meet students’ needs.
