Instructional Principles in Content Areas: Improving Language and Literacy

This presentation will introduce a set of seven principles of effective instruction for English learners and provide examples of instructional strategies that help teachers develop the language and literacy skills of English learners within the context of their content area classes. Participants will see how activities connected to each principle can be applied at the primary and secondary levels, the research behind the activities, and how they are effective teaching tools. Within the perspective of this workshop, teachers will be asked to develop one activity or lesson that incorporates one or two of principles and activities presented.
