This paper identifies and compares the English language skills (reading and writing) addressed in ABE/ESL instruction to the English language skills (reading and writing) addressed in college entrance exams; analyzes gaps between these two areas; and proposes strategies for addressing the gaps in ESL/ABE teacher training and instructional practice. It is one paper in the Adult Education Academic Session on Preparing Adult Learners for Academic: What Do We Need to Do?, which will examine the skills that learners need to succeed in academic courses of study and then give practical suggestions on designing transitional curricula, planning and delivering instruction, and finding appropriate materials.
