Online Lesson Plans for Financial Literacy and Consumer Protection

10:30 - 11:15am EDT

Baltimore Convention Center, Room 331

Presented at: TESOL 2016

This session introduces a free, online resource designed for educators and other professionals working with adults with limited reading proficiency. The resource is a companion to the websites Consumer.gov and Consumidor.gov, developed by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission to provide accessible, reader-friendly information on financial literacy topics such as budgeting, obtaining loans and credit, and avoiding fraud and scams.

The presenters demonstrate the content and features of the online resource and show how teachers, tutors, or volunteers can use the lesson plans. Using their own devices, participants explore the resource and the related Consumer.gov and Consumidor.gov sites, individually or in groups and reflect on how they might use the sites in their individual contexts.
