Participants will be able to:
1) foster a motivating content and language learning environment that is rich in words for linguistically diverse students;
2) select high frequency, high-utility academic vocabulary;
3) promote student's strategic vocabulary acquisition, including incorporating learners' first languages through cognate awareness.
Throughout the session participants will be able to apply what they learn by participating in engaging, multi-modal activities aimed at reinforcing students' vocabulary knowledge and assessments that can strategically inform classroom vocabulary and literacy instruction. The presentation will be interactive to maximize participant involvement and learning. Presenters will facilitate participant analysis and reflection through individual, pair, and small group discussions and a variety of classroom-ready activities to examine research-based components that comprise strategic vocabulary instruction aimed at promoting the academic content and language needs of linguistically diverse students.
