Data Inspires Pride for Pidgin, a Hawaii Language

Recent census data indicate that many native Hawaiians claim to speak Pidgin, a language stereotyped by some as being unsophisticated form of English, observers say. Future census surveys may reflect an even greater number of Pidgin speakers as people see the language as recognized by the federal government, statistician Christine Gambino says.
