St. Paul Island Revives Aleut Language, Culture

The Aleut Community of St. Paul's Office of Cultural Affairs in Alaska is leading an effort to revive the Aleut or Unangam Tunuu language, which has few speakers who are fluent. Teachers this summer held an Aleut-language intensive program, in which participants engaged in conversations and skits with elders to learn the language. The aim is to develop fluent speakers who can teach the language to young students.
