Alaska and its largest city may not be regarded as particularly diverse places, but over the past decade, the Anchorage School District has become one of the most diverse in the country, serving students who speak nearly 100 different languages.

This article features the district's Newcomer's Center, which serves to help students develop both language and academic skills so that they may enter ELL or regular education classes; helps students become acculturated to U.S. schools and society; and, helps students become aware of educational expectations and opportunities.
