An elementary school in Portland, Oregon has launched a language program to help students from Somali families better learn their school subjects by maintaining or learning the languages of Somalia. Both languages -- Maxaa and Maay-Maay -- are being taught to kindergarten and first-grade students by teacher Salaad O'Barrow.
