English language learners face the dual challenges of mastering English and acquiring the academic skills and knowledge needed for educational success. Educating English Language Learners, prepared under the auspices of the Center for Research on Education, Diversity and Excellence (CREDE), provides an extensive review of the research concerning the learning processes and outcomes of English language learners in U.S. schools, from prekindergarten through Grade 12. This volume focuses on acquisition of oral English language skills, development of literacy, instructional issues related to literacy, and achievement in academic domains, and concludes with a summary chapter that offers recommendations for further research. The syntheses of research findings are supported by sets of detailed summary tables and references.
