Organized around the themes of conflict and conflict resolution, this integrated language, social studies, and culture unit for middle school world studies classes contains four mini-units (20 lessons) on the Incan Empire and the Conquistadors, the Reformation, the opening of Japan to trade, and Ethiopia and Italy. Individual lessons focus on the causes of conflict and how the conflicts were resolved. Lessons also provide students with background knowledge of world cultures of particular interest to African, Asian, and South American students. Student readings, maps, photographs, worksheets, and graphic organizers are included, as are instructions and materials for sentence strip activities, role plays, craftwork, and jigsaws, along with background information for the teacher. 1996.
