Professional Development
CAL conducts preservice and inservice professional development
for teachers of English as a second language or foreign languages
in a wide range of settings, including Grades preK–12,
college and university, adult education, and the workplace. CAL also provides services for teachers who have second language learners in their classrooms.
Topics include methods, techniques, and materials for language
instruction; administration of proficiency tests and informal
approaches to assessment; content-based ESL; sheltered content
instruction; two-way immersion education; standards-based instruction
and assessment; cultural orientation for immigrants and refugees;
and uses of technology for language instruction.
CAL will work with you to customize professional development to
meet the unique needs of your school, district, or staff. CAL's
dedicated staff draw on years of experience as researchers
and scholars and in the classroom as teachers, coaches, and curriculum
developers.
CAL's professional development workshops and training of trainers enable teachers to work with language learners by providing the latest in ESL and FL methods, techniques, and materials tailored to your specific circumstances. Trainers use curricula and research-based materials developed by CAL to help educators and paraprofessionals work effectively with language learners in their classrooms and agencies.
