Helping Educators Work Effectively with English Language Learners

Recent CAL SIOP Service Projects

CAL is collaborating with states, schools and districts (PreK-12) to design and conduct SIOP professional development programs to meet their particular needs. We are now expanding to add services working with adult education programs. The following highlights some examples of the SIOP workshops and professional development services provided by CAL.

SIOP Model Overview

CAL provided one or two days SIOP Model* overview sessions to administrators in these school districts:

  • Berkeley County Schools, WV

  • Stafford County Public Schools, VA

  • Valley View Public School District 365U, IL

SIOP Model Teacher Workshops

CAL provided four to eight days of SIOP Model professional development workshops to teachers in these school districts:

  • Barrett Elementary School, Arlington, VA

  • Berkeley County Schools, WV

  • Big Horn County School District 3, WY

  • Carlin Springs Elementary School, Arlington, VA

  • Columbia Public Schools, MO

  • Community Consolidated District 21, IL

  • Danbury Public Schools, CT

  • Dillon School District Four, SC

  • Featherstone Elementary School, Prince William County, VA

  • Osseo Area Schools, District 279, MN

  • Stafford County Public Schools, VA

  • Woodbridge Middle School, Prince William County, VA

SIOP Model Professional Development Projects

These projects included teacher workshops, coaching workshops, training of trainers workshops, SIOP overviews for administrators, site visits, review and expand workshops, and consultations.

  • Capistrano Unified School District, CA
    August – September 2011
    CAL provided Review and Renew teacher workshops, Teacher Leader workshops, and a SIOP Coaching workshop.

  • Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, NC
    The 2011-2012 school year
    CAL developed an extensive professional development series for the district, including SIOP site visits, Trainer of Trainers workshops, SIOP workshops for elementary and secondary teachers new to the model, and several sets of Renew and Review SIOP workshops tailored to the content areas of English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math.

  • Fenville Public Schools, MI
    August 2011 – March 2012
    CAL provided a series of SIOP workshops for high school teachers new to the model, as well as a number of observations and coaching sessions.

  • Glen Ellyn School District, IL
     September 2011 – April 2012
    CAL provided SIOP teacher workshops and coaching sessions.

  • Plainfield School District 202, IL
    September 2011 – April 2012
    CAL provided SIOP teacher workshops and coaching site visits.

  • St. Louis Public Schools, MO
    September 2011 – March 2012
    CAL provided grant partnership meetings and SIOP teacher workshops for math teachers.

  • Sugarland Elementary School, Loudoun County Schools, VA
    September 2011 and February 2012
    CAL provided SIOP workshops for coaches, coaching consultations, and SIOP wrap-up sessions identifying areas for further professional growth in SIOP coaching.

  • West Contra Costa Unified School District, CA
    The 2011-2012 school year              
    CAL designed a professional development series, consisting of SIOP teacher workshops in the content areas of English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math (for teachers new to the model), SIOP coaching, and Review and Renew workshops.

*The SIOP Model was developed by researchers at California State University, Long Beach (Jana Echevarria and Mary Ellen Vogt), and the Center for Applied Linguistics (Deborah J. Short) under the auspices of the Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence (CREDE), a national research center funded by the U.S. Department of Education from 1996 through 2003.
