CAL is continuing to expand its successful series of professional development institutes focusing on key issues for educators. CAL Institutes provide research-based strategies and practical, hands-on tools, and help teachers develop classroom activities that target the academic language demands of college and career readiness standards, including the Common Core State Standards.

Building Educational Communities of Inclusion: Cultural Proficiency and Equity

Learn effective strategies to promote cultural proficiency in your campus and/or school district by advocating for equity and social justice as a means to create educational access and opportunity for every student, their family, and the community they live in.

Developing Academic Literacy and Language in the Content Areas

This institute provides research-based strategies and practical, hands-on tools with a focus on helping English learners develop academic literacy and language skills while also developing academic content knowledge.

Foundations of Dual Language Instruction

This institute introduces practitioners to the research base for effective dual language instruction with a focus on practical applications for classroom use. Strategies and hands-on activities will be shared that promote student interaction to build receptive and productive language skills in two languages while building content knowledge in order to develop bilingualism, biliteracy, and multicultural competence.

Leading Dual Language Programs for Student Success: A CAL Leadership Institute

This institute is designed to help educators strengthen their leadership by gaining a solid understanding of the benefits of dual language education and learning how they can develop an effective dual language program that promotes student success on their campus.

Math and Science: Skills and Strategies to Adapt for English Learners

This institute provides strategies and activities to help teachers provide access to math and science concepts for English learners while also developing their language skills. Attendees will participate in instructional activities that they can modify to implement in their preK-12 math and science classrooms.

Newcomers in Your School: Cultural Connections and Instructional Strategies

This interactive two-day institute provides effective strategies and practical hands-on activities to create a welcoming environment for newcomer students and facilitate their learning.

Oral Language Development for English Learners

This institute will focus on developing students’ listening and speaking skills, with an understanding that these skills build concept comprehension for English learners and bridge to literacy skills.

CAL SIOP Training of Trainers Institutes

CAL offers two strands of SIOP TOT Institutes to best meet the needs of educators.

Please note: these institutes are not intended for those who are learning SIOP for the first time. Contact CAL about SIOP introductory workshops.

SIOP TOT I: Foundations is designed to help participants enhance their knowledge of the SIOP Model to support delivery of effective professional development workshops for educators. This institute is designed for those with a basic knowledge of the SIOP Model and seek foundational skills in creating and delivering a SIOP Model professional development program.

SIOP TOT II: Advanced Strategies focuses on strategies and techniques to provide job-embedded support, such as coaching, to help teachers more effectively implement the SIOP Model. This institute is designed for those who have foundational skills in delivering SIOP Model professional development, and who currently support educators in districts and schools where SIOP is being implemented.

Spanish Literacy Institute: Fostering Spanish Language and Literacy Development

Each two-day Spanish Literacy institute is designed to provide participants with effective methodologies for teaching academic language and literacy in Spanish to students in a wide variety of K-8 educational setting where Spanish is the language of instruction. Classroom practices are framed by an understanding of Spanish language arts standards and linguistic features in Spanish.

Strategies to Strengthen Refugee Orientation and ESL Provision

This interactive one-day institute will provide practical strategies and resources for maximizing the impact of refugee orientation and ESL instruction by aligning their content and key messages.

This institute features the materials from the research-based curriculum What’s Different About Teaching Reading to Students Learning English? and is designed to provide teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to teach reading effectively to English language learners.

Teaching Reading to Students Learning English: Training of Trainers

This TOT institute is based on CAL's widely-used professional development program, What's Different about Teaching Reading to Students Learning English? and will provide specialists with everything they need to bring professional development to educators who teach beginning reading and reading comprehension skills to English learners.
