This two-day Spanish Literacy Institute is designed to provide participants with effective methodologies for teaching academic language and literacy in Spanish to students in grades K-6 in bilingual programs. Classroom practices are framed by an understanding of Spanish language arts standards and successful program design.

The What’s Different about Teaching Reading to Students Learning English Training of Trainers Institute will provide specialists with everything they needs to bring professional development to educators who teach reading in classes with English language learners. A graduate credit option is also available.
Hot Topics in ELL Education
June 24-26, 2013
This engaging three-day institute is designed to increase understanding and provide practical resources about important topics for educators working with English language learners in their classrooms and schools. Educators learn how to target the demands of the Common Core State Standards right from the start for ELLs who are at the beginning stages of English language acquisition.
The institute focuses on two key topics from CAL’s new Hot Topics in ELL Education professional development series: Listening and Speaking: Oral Language and Vocabulary Development for English Language Learners and Math and Science: Skills and Strategies to Adapt Instruction for English Language Learners.
Multiculturalism in the Classroom
June 27-28, 2013
This workshop provides hands-on guidance on the use of the refugee family and youth videos, A New Day and Be Who You Are, and the companion facilitator’s guide, Connecting Diverse Cultures. Attendees learn to use the practical and effective activity plans to help increase student understanding of and appreciation for other cultures and beliefs.
SIOP Training of Trainers
July 8-11, 2013
This comprehensive and interactive four-day institute is designed to help participants develop and deliver the SIOP Model professional development. Modeled after CAL SIOP workshops and based on the resource, Using the SIOP Model: Professional Development Manual for Sheltered Instruction, participants will acquire the knowledge and skills to help PreK-12 teachers with advanced-level knowledge of SIOP to better integrate content and language instruction for English learners.
