CAL Institutes provide research-based strategies and practical, hands-on tools to help you develop effective classroom activities, including meeting the demands of the Common Core State Standards.

Spanish Literacy Institute
May 20-21, 2014 - Registration Closed

This two-day Spanish Literacy Institute is designed to provide participants with effective methodologies for teaching academic language and literacy in Spanish to students in grades K-6 in a wide variety of programs where Spanish is the language of instruction. Classroom practices are framed by an understanding of Spanish language arts standards and linguistic features in Spanish.

What’s Different Training of Trainers
June 25-27, 2014

The What’s Different about Teaching Reading to Students Learning English Training of Trainers Institute will provide specialists with everything they need to bring professional development to educators who teach reading in classes with English language learners. A graduate credit option is also available.

SIOP Training of Trainers Institutes
SIOP TOT institutes are designed to help participants develop and deliver the SIOP Model professional development. These comprehensive and interactive institutes are modeled after CAL SIOP workshops and based on the resource, Using the SIOP Model: Professional Development Manual for Sheltered Instruction. (Please note: these institutes are not intended for those who are learning SIOP for the first time. Contact CAL about SIOP introductory workshops.)

To meet the needs of all participants, two strands of the SIOP TOT institutes are offered.

SIOP TOT: Foundations
July 14-17, 2014

This institute is designed for those with a basic knowledge of the SIOP Model through some past SIOP Model workshop attendance or self-study. Participants will acquire a solid foundation of the SIOP Model and the knowledge and skills to help PreK-12 teachers better integrate content and language instruction for English learners.

SIOP TOT: Advanced
July 14-17, 2014

This institute is designed for those with an advanced level of knowledge of the SIOP Model. Participants will review and renew specific features of the SIOP Model in order to deepen their knowledge of the model. They will also expand their skills in supporting teachers’ SIOP implementation.

Research-Based Vocabulary Instruction for English Learners – Grades K-12
July 18, 2014

This interactive one-day institute is designed to increase understanding and provide practical and research-based resources and strategies for vocabulary instruction for educators working with English learners in their classrooms and schools.

July 22-24, 2014
