CAL Institutes provide research-based strategies and practical, hands-on tools to help you develop effective classroom activities, including meeting the demands of the Common Core State Standards.

Developing Academic Literacy and Language in the Content Areas

This institute provides research-based strategies and practical, hands-on tools with a focus on helping English learners develop academic literacy and language skills while also developing academic content knowledge.

Math and Science: Skills and Strategies to Adapt for English Learners Institute

This institute provides strategies and activities to help teachers provide access to math and science concepts for English learners while also developing their language skills. Attendees will participate in instructional activities that they can modify to implement in their preK-12 math and science classrooms.

Oral Language Development for English Learners Institute

This institute will focus on developing students’ listening and speaking skills, with an understanding that these skills build concept comprehension for English learners and bridge to literacy skills.

Research-Based Vocabulary Instruction for English Learners

This interactive one-day institute is designed to increase understanding and provide practical and research-based resources and strategies for vocabulary instruction for educators working with English learners in their classrooms and schools.

SIOP Training of Trainers Institutes
SIOP TOT institutes are designed to help participants develop and deliver the SIOP Model professional development. These comprehensive and interactive institutes are modeled after CAL SIOP workshops and based on the resource, Using the SIOP Model: Professional Development Manual for Sheltered Instruction. (Please note: these institutes are not intended for those who are learning SIOP for the first time. Contact CAL about SIOP introductory workshops.)

To meet the needs of all participants, two strands of the SIOP TOT institutes are offered.

SIOP TOT: Foundations

This institute is designed for those with a basic knowledge of the SIOP Model through some past SIOP Model workshop attendance or self-study. Participants will acquire a solid foundation of the SIOP Model and the knowledge and skills to help PreK-12 teachers better integrate content and language instruction for English learners.

SIOP TOT: Advanced

This institute is designed for those with an advanced level of knowledge of the SIOP Model. Participants will review and renew specific features of the SIOP Model in order to deepen their knowledge of the model. They will also expand their skills in supporting teachers’ SIOP implementation.

Spanish Literacy Institute

Each two-day Spanish Literacy institute is designed to provide participants with effective methodologies for teaching academic language and literacy in Spanish to students in a wide variety of programs where Spanish is the language of instruction. Classroom practices are framed by an understanding of Spanish language arts standards and linguistic features in Spanish.

Teaching Reading to Students Learning English: Direct Strategies
This institute features the materials from the research-based curriculum What’s Different About Teaching Reading to Students Learning English? and is designed to provide teachers with the knowledge and skills they need to teach reading effectively to English language learners. A graduate credit option is available.
