Principles to practice approach for EL success

SIOP Training of Trainers (TOT) Institute: Advanced

Learn how to provide SIOP Model professional development tailored to the needs of your district and schools.

This comprehensive and interactive institute is designed to help participants develop and deliver SIOP Model professional development.

The Advanced institute is designed for those with an advanced level of knowledge of the SIOP Model. In this institute, participants will review and renew specific features of the SIOP Model in order to deepen their knowledge of the SIOP Model. They will also extend their skills in supporting teachers’ SIOP implementation through the development and delivery of SIOP workshops, and through providing job embedded professional development such as SIOP coaching, supporting lesson planning in grade level or professional learning communities, and lesson study.

This is the right strand for those who:

  • Have attended at least a four day introductory SIOP workshop and have a strong knowledge base of the SIOP Model

  • Have implemented the SIOP Model in their classrooms and/or have a lot of experience supporting teachers who implement the SIOP Model

  • Are able to identify examples of SIOP implementation but need more assistance in helping teachers implement with fidelity.


$1,250/person. Send 2 people or more and pay $1,200 each.

Cost includes all training materials (SIOP training manual, retail value of $199, and hand-outs) and breakfast and lunch each day.

Travel and hotel expenses are the responsibility of the participant.

SIOP TOT: Advanced Agenda

Day One:

  • Key characteristics and elements of effective SIOP Model professional development workshops and implementation support

  • SIOP Model review and renew designed to deepen knowledge and implementation with a focus on specific features

Day Two:

  • SIOP Model review and renew designed to deepen knowledge and implementation with a focus on specific features

  • Special considerations when coaching with the SIOP Model

  • Planning for implementation support

Day Three:

  • SIOP Model review and renew designed to deepen knowledge and implementation with a focus on specific features

  • Supporting the lesson planning process using the SIOP Model

  • Developing a school/ district SIOP implementation plan

Day Four:

  • Special considerations for working with adult learners

  • SIOP lesson study

  • Presentations and peer review

Daily Training Schedule

8:30 – 9:00 am Breakfast and conversation
9:00 am – Noon Morning training session
Noon – 1:00 pm Lunch and networking
1:00 – 4:00 pm Afternoon training session (including mid-afternoon dessert break)

Registration and Payment

Please decide about your method of payment (credit card or purchase order) at the time of registration. Your seat at the workshop will be confirmed once payment is received. If paying by purchase order, you can complete the online payment form by entering your purchase order number. If you do not have a purchase order, complete steps 1-4 on the registration form to tentatively reserve your seat and fax a signed copy of the purchase order to 888-700-3629 as soon as possible.

Cancellation Policy
Participants may cancel their registration and receive a full refund three (3) weeks prior to the course start date by sending an email to store@cal.org. After that date, no refunds will be available. Registrants may choose to receive the workshop materials by mail or may transfer the registration to another individual up to three (3) days prior to the course start date.

About SIOP Institutes

SIOP Training of Trainers (TOT) institutes are designed for district professional developers, district and school-based coaches, administrators, and teacher leaders who have some experience with the SIOP Model and who support teacher instruction. Participants need to be familiar with the SIOP Model.

Modeled after SIOP workshops, SIOP TOT institutes include a variety of activities, such as demonstration and explanation, analysis of video teaching sequences, and small group tasks. The resource Using the SIOP Model: Professional Development Manual for Sheltered Instruction will be incorporated throughout the workshop.
